This is the football off season and the big E word (expansion) gets tossed around from the Mountain West looking to add Boise and others, the Big 10 looking to add a twelfth team for some extra scratch, and now the Pac-10 is possibly acting upon their expansion thoughts from this past summer to form the Pac-12.
New Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott mentioned during this past summer that they would take a 12 to 18 month approach look into expansion and directly mentioned Utah and Colorado. That is a huge improvement over former league commissioner Tom Hansen who had this to say about adding Utah and BYU to the league in an exit interview he did with the Los Angeles Times back in June:
"Q: The Pac-10 has been the Pac-10 since 1978. What about expansion?
A: You expand a conference to extend your television imprint in football, to get greater football TV rights, and there just aren't any members close by that would do that for us. There are not enough TV homes in Utah and any institution within our footprint would only be a negative because you'd be dividing up the same money more ways."
That view has either been disproved or that now since the Big 10 is making a push to add a twelfth team in about a year. The big reason Pac-10 expansion is getting big news is because of the recent hire the league made with Kevin Weiberg as its chief operating officer who will be second in command behind Commissioner Scott.
However the significance of this hire is explained in an interview that Larry Scott had with the San Jose Mercury News:
"He [Kevin Weiberg] has a very diverse and successful track record. In particular, in his experience as the Big 12 commissioner and an executive with the Big Ten Network, he has dealt with some of the most complicated issues — from expansion to TV networks to media rights in general."
If the Pac-10 is looking for a guy to run their tv deal this is guy. Especially since the Pac-10 received $43 million from their combined television deal with Fox, Versus, and ABC/ESPN. While the Big 10 received $66 million from the Big Ten Network alone in the same year.
Expansion to the Pac-10? The only logical choices are Utah and Colorado, especially if the Pac-10 wants to be a stickler with inviting research schools. BYU may be a better fight geography wise, but they are not considered a top research school and the Pac-10 plays games on Sunday which is something that BYU does not do.
Here is more from the San Jose Mercury News:
"We’re looking at it very seriously. It wasn’t something identified for me [Larry Scott] by the presidents when I took the job. But it’s very natural as you look at the value of the conference from a media standpoint. If we were ever going to look at expansion, this would be the logical time."
The timing is correct, because the current Pac-10 television deal expires during the 2011-2012 academic year which would lead negotiations to begin sometime this year. So, this summer could be the start of the league sending out those glossy invites to two schools. Utah most likely would make the move since nothing is guaranteed that the league will get an auto-BCS bid even if they invite Boise State (even though most say they would, including myself). The Pac-10 would want to have their teams up front to present to the the television folks to maximize the dollar.
However, I doubt the Pac-10 will add just one team and getting Colorado could be tough because the Big XII is the leader in revenue, and even though Colorado was 43rd on the list of all FBS schools they would fair less in the Pac-10 depending on what a new Pac-10 television deal could bring in. The Buffs do have more in common with the Pac-10 in location and academics, plus travel would be less which is important for the minor sports.
Sports Illustrated brings up some of the same points as mentioned above:
Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott says that if the conference is going to expand, a decision will likely be made in the next year.
[...]
Scott said it made sense to have a decision about expansion before starting to negotiate new television deals that expire following the 2011-12 academic year.Scott says "serious evaluation" of the topic will go on in the next six to 12 months. He said the primary factor in the decision will be finding schools that fit into the conference culturally and academically and determining whether the benefits of adding extra teams outweigh the costs.
That could mean an invite could come this summer where Utah and team b join the Pac-10 for the 2011 season, but that would mean that the current deal would be split 12 ways and bring in less money for all the schools. So, an invite may not come until the new teams would join in 2012 at the start of the new television deal.
That timing could mean a few things, first Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson better invite Boise State this summer to ensure that the Mountain West gets an auto bid. However, Utah would still most likely make the jump if invited because say the Pac-10 invites Utah in the summer of 2011 which would be when Boise officially joins the league for the upcoming football season the MWC will still not know if they are going to receive an auto-bid and still make the jump.
Gotta love these off season topics/rumors about expansion as this is similar to the false rumor that Pitt was heading to the Big 10 just short time after the Big 10 announced their plans to expand.
Then the best mention about the expansion rumors came out of local Salt Lake television station ABC 4:
The University of Utah to the PAC 10? BYU to the Big 12? It could happen.
This is all speculation...but sources are telling ABC 4 Sports that Utah will be invited to join the PAC 10 conference, but not BYU. The Cougars could wind up in the Big 12...or staying put in the MWC.
Several dominoes have to fall first, but here's how it could all play out...
Huh? Gotta love those unnamed sources that say this may or may not happen. Especially the line that BYU could be in the Big XII or stay in the Mountain West, Wow! what a revelation that BYU may stay put. ABC 4 is basing a potential move to the Big XII by BYU to replace Colorado who would be the logical choice to partner up with Utah.
As memes or rumors go this one seems to have some legs and is not the fly by night Pitt to Big 10 rumors. Either way this decision may not happen until the summer of 2011 where there could be a major shift between the haves and have nots with the Big 10 and Pac-10 leading the way with expansion.
Believe me when I say this if Utah gets an invite to join the Pac-10 they will take it in a second, but the only way that does not happen is if the Mountain West has an automatic BCS bid in hand.
PollWill Utah be in the Pac-10 for the 2012 football season?

February 11th, 2010 at 6:14 am
I know the Pac-10 will say things like BYU lacks the research-based prestige of the current members and things like that.
But face it, it comes down to this: Nobody wants to play against 23-year-old sophomores, especially in football.
Although I'm not sure why Pac-10 schools don't mind playing against semi-pro athletes ...

We have another pair of tickets available fo give away because we have tickets for both basketball games on February 20. Mei Ling took our February 19 volleyball tickets because we'll be attending the opening game of the 2009 Rainbow baseball season. Hopefully, we can sneak in for the last set if it goes a full five.
The next night is another basketball two-fer. The Wahine are playing LaTech at 5 pm and the Decimateds are playing Cal Poly in a bracketbuster at 8 pm. If you'd like a pair of tickets, please send me an e-mail - swood at hoku dot com and include your real name and a daytime or cell telephone number.
Hope to see some familiar faces at the opening softball games(s) tonight.

I really think that the WAC needs to revisit its revenue-sharing policy. Best way to keep Boise State? Let it keep all of its BCS money. It's always seemed a little odd that New Mexico State, Utah State and, even, Hawaii should benefit from Boise's football success. And then we don't have to read any more uncomfortable stories about how WAC schools are rooting for Boise.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:20 am
Imagine if this were the old WAC, and UH fans had to root for BYU to make it to a BCS.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:25 am
By the way, for all of that cheering for Boise State a few months ago, did it really help UH?
I mean, coaches are still asked to take "voluntary" pay cuts and the accumulated deficit is expected to balloon to $6 million this fiscal year.
If you can't do 55, don't get busted going 57. If you're going to be broke, anyway, then cheer against conference opponents.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:33 am
Wouldn't things be even worse without Boise State's money?
February 11th, 2010 at 6:39 am
ST,
UH got a little more than $100k for BSU getting into the BCS, right? That is nothing compared to the AD deficit.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:44 am
Had to get out the BIG magnifying glass to figure out who the two others were in the picture. Wow! Colt has really put on some weight!
My big concern this fall - and this is not a joke - is which of the major candidates for governor and lt. governor will be a REAL supporter of public education from bottom to top and who will also be around long enough to put his - or her - values & principles into practice.
Back to sports!! Yes!!! baseball here in Hawai`i is here!! and DABEEGs are also ready to start the 2010 spring training season.
From time to time, DrDoc and I talk about the dream we had about taking a two-year mid-life mini-retirement once the kid went off to college by spending the first year with the American League and the second with the National League from spring training through the World Series at home and on the road. We'd travel from town to town in a mobile home and visit all the attractions and restaurants in every city.
By the time we got to that point, we were too broke to take any time off. Alas, that situation hasn't changed, but at least tv coverage has improved greatly.
Pauoa Boy - read your comment about the men's basketball team. Have you ever considered going into coaching as a career? I assume that both high school and college coaches these days are all college graduates. I know you're a career Marine, but what would it take for you to go into paid full-time coaching?
Off to get ready to go to work - since I'm cutting out early to go to the opening game of the softball season, I have to move my workday up a couple of hours. After that, we'll head on down to the Y to work out.
Everyone - have a good day.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:44 am
ST,
One reason why Colorado might leave the Big 12 is that their revenue sharing policy gives more money to the teams that the TV networks decide to show, so Texas gets a lot more than Colorado. I would actually like the WAC to do a similar type of model because UH would definitely be in the upper half of the WAC for TV appearances.
The WAC on the other hand caps the BCS bowl money at $3 million, with expenses coming out of that. We remember how BCS bowls require the band, cheerleaders, and others to attend for a week or so and the huge expense involved...UH got over $4.5 million from the Sugar Bowl money but now the most BSU or any other WAC team can get is $3 million. So, making the Fiesta Bowl does not bring in the huge windfall that it did the last time for BSU.
If even going to a BCS bowl cannot bring in the big dollars, BSU has a much bigger incentive to go to the MWC. They would have lower expenses and they would get a lot more money from the conference due to a bigger TV contract and MUCH more NCAA basketball money. The MWC has 3 ranked teams now and have had a lot more NCAA basketball success than the WAC so their share is much bigger.

lava and garret,
kink of like putting a thumb in the hole of the Hoover Dam maybe? i dunno, but if you are watching the legislators, the gambling bill is moving very, very fast through the hoops down there.

GO WARRIORS

February 11th, 2010 at 6:54 am
Frankly, with the blatant money BCS bowl grab by the WAC, it appears that the WAC figures that BSU is leaving anyway and they want to get as much money from BSU while it can. The problem with the new policy is that if UH makes another BCS bowl, it appears that UH might just break even due to the $3 million cap and higher travel costs from Hawaii.
It would be a SHAME if the *other* WAC members would make a profit while UH would just break even if UH made a BCS bowl. But that is the reality today if UH would make another BCS bowl.
If a WAC team makes a BCS bowl as is the highest-rated non-AQ team in a BCS bowl game, then the WAC team will get $3 million and the other WAC teams will split $3 million. However, the WAC team that goes to the BCS bowl will have huge expenses for the bowl game...which could come out to $3 million for a school like UH. So, every other WAC school would make more than $300k profit and UH would make $0.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:58 am
Bulla,
WassupDoc and the papers have been doing a great job updating us on the gambling bill discussion. That could be a HUGE revenue stream for Hawaii that would benefit UH if some of that money was specified for education. I'm sure that the Vegas casinos are spending a lot of money lobbying against it, just like they spend a lot to advertise every time a Native American casino plan is up for voting in California.
The Texas state lottery earns $1 billion a year in profit and *all* of that money supports public education.
February 11th, 2010 at 6:59 am
Back to work for me...I was up at 6am working so I figured I deserved a break.
February 11th, 2010 at 7:06 am
thanks Garret,
interesting developments with the construction of that legislation. years ago the supporters tried to attach it to an education bill, it didn't fly. now, they are trying to piggy back along the hawaiian homes commission and their financial plight......a study showed that having 2 casinos, 1 on north shore and 1 in waikiki would generate 4,000 jobs and $712 million in revenue.....annually.
those are the numbers flying around, just sharing the 411........

Let me break down the numbers in a different way:
SEC gets $200 mil/year from TV, $16.7 million per team (more than some D-IA schools entire Athletic Budget!)
Big 10 was reported to get something like $12 million per team from the Big 10 Network last year
Pac-10 gets $43 million from its TV contract, $4.8 million per team
Big 12 teams do not split the money evenly, so Colorado gets somewhere between $2 million and $3 million. The last numbers I saw was that Colorado got *less* than $2 million in TV money from the Big 12 in 2007.
If a Pac-10 Network can make Big 10 money, Colorado could get $10 million more per year by switching conferences. Would anyone consider that a lateral move?
February 11th, 2010 at 7:54 am
Some info on how the Big 12 splits up their money:
February 11th, 2010 at 7:56 am
The funny thing is that the Big 12 commissioner who hated the unequal sharing of the revenue and predicted that it would cause problems for the Big 12 is now in charge of picking teams for Pac-10 expansion and might be able to get Colorado due to the Big 12 rules that he hated when he was commissioner.
February 11th, 2010 at 7:57 am
On the subject of gambling, I wouldn't want to see a full on "VEGAS" but think a Lottery/scratch off games with all profits going to the schools and only schools, would be a good idea. Would have to make it so the money grubbing politicians couldn't get their sticky finger on any of it ever never ever.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:02 am
Can the different conferences put some kind of penalty clause in their membership, leave the conference an pay xxx amount in fines or something like that? Or is that already done?
February 11th, 2010 at 8:19 am
Good Morning Gangeez!
Mr. Tsai-
What a lovely Tshmorgasbord (yep, that's a brand new word used here for the first time ever) of pics u have for us today!
Love the pic of Colt with the Obamas. What's your gut feeling about the Coltster's immediate future, Stephen?
February 11th, 2010 at 8:20 am
Pomai-
I like the idea of a lottery too. I'll never win, but it keeps hope alive.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:24 am
No matter how ya slice it, SOMETHING has to be done to resuscitate Hawaii's floundering economy and our shrinking tax revenues. I like the proposal that Herr Buller mentioned above, maybe with a larger share going to education.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:27 am
Pomai - #48 - I think that's already done.
BC was talking to someone from Denver this morning. She made some good points. CU might want to switch because they're more successful in recruiting from CA than TX and they have a bigger fan base in the West. The thing with the TV market size is moot. Denver is a pro town and is Broncos, and to a lesser degree, Nuggets & Rockies, 24/7.
Another thing about marketing in Asia - getting athletes into UH maybe problematic because of their TOEFL scores. When I was working at UH, a lot of the Japanese & Chinese students needed intensive ESL study before starting their regular course of study. Didn't Jiang go to a prep school or something on the Mainland before coming to UH?
February 11th, 2010 at 8:28 am
Good morning Tsaikos...hope all is well....busy busy busy so I have to esme and out...just stopping in to see what is going on....
February 11th, 2010 at 8:30 am
I love the idea of a lottery. Maryland's lottery money is earmarked for education and emergency services. Never played when I lived there.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:30 am
Cheer for conference opponents???
For me, no sense to cheer for them. One reason is because how stupid they look everytime the come to our house and try to walk away right before "Hawaii Pono I" like they didn't know it was coming after our national anthem... Right... Stupid!!!!!
February 11th, 2010 at 8:34 am
I never gripe about paying taxes -- but I have never been inclined to pay an optional tax, which is pretty much what a lottery is. I am all in favor though given that there are plenty of folks who do seem to be falling all over themselves to pay that optional tax -- and if they want to there is less that I have to pay I suppose.
I have heard lotteries characterized as "a tax on stupid people." That might be trite and offensive but it isn't that far off the mark.
I just noticed the other day that the Oregon Lottery had opened a kiosk inside the C terminal at PDX -- and there were folks sitting there and scratching tickets. I have to say that really surprised me.
February 11th, 2010 at 8:38 am
Maybe a "a tax on hopelessly optimistic people" is a better characterization. I have a friend who buys lottery tickets religiously. She is an attorney and plenty smart. Hmm... come to think of it, maybe it is her religion.

While waiting for the Wahine Basketball game to start I got glimpse of the softballers getting some cracks with live pitching from Coach Coolen.
Hard to see from the 3rd level of the parking structure who's who, but since Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu is one of the taller players, she was consistently pounding balls into the outfield netting. If that netting weren't there they'd be into the middle of the tennis court complex. Since Tauali'i and Majam are lefties I only saw right handers from my vantage point. Hope to see both of them killin' it at the plate tonight!!!
Should be a good opener for the Wahine tonight.
Ricketts should get the start tonight and we all know what she can do, so no surprises there. Looking to see if Tauali'i regains her form from early and midway through last season, looking to see Majam "car-jack" opposing pitchers, and looking to see the infield chemistry between Grimes and the unsettled infield positions outside of 1st and 2nd base.
Was real windy at Manoa last night with winds thundering through the valley from a northern direction...

Great breakdown Garrett. But give me BCS bowl game + break even vs stay home make + $300k - year after year after year - sometimes you take a job to break even or even at a loss to get to the bigger fish / pond.
The dynamics of participating in a BCS bowl game in terms of dollars is ludicrous! And is usually not looked upon as how much am I'm going to get paid that day. I bet the thing salivates the AD is the new marketability of the team down the road, the future ticket sales, the exposure and attention, the growing fan base nationally which all adds up to the bottom line for the program, Playing in a game that is designed for royalty attracts the best you can get for your program, Dollar or Talent. - so yeah, who cares about how much you can make playing the game, that nice - but show me real benefit of whats to come and somehow track that if you can. Ludicrous!
Would have been nice to see the potential of what it could have done for UH if the wheels didn't fall apart.
February 11th, 2010 at 9:19 am
If Boise St gets through Sept, i know it's far far away. but they are loaded beyond WAC years. they may have a legitimate shot at #1 in the nation and good fight to play in the national title game.
I'll be rooting because they are represent the WAC but good gawd will that separate the talent from the rest of the league even more not to mention the local talent that might want to contend for a national title. - yeah, better not root for them! =)
February 11th, 2010 at 9:26 am
good cloudy morning everyone have a good day. for some its aloha friday cause its a furlough day tomorrow.
again good luck to the UH teams starting their season in a few days.

Profits from "gamblin" - I like Hong Kong's distribution of 50% to medical; 30% to education; and 20% to government.
The 1st 2 can be interchangable or different %s, but an excellent way to "balance" the State's budget - any surplus goes into a special fund that the Legislature cannot touch - annually, the 4 mayors and Govenor select 5 needs (exclude education and medical) and residents vote on how the money to be used since we are the ones who will be enriching the State budget - majority rules.
And, all monies that were alloted to education and medical can be used to support other needs.
February 11th, 2010 at 9:48 am
postmanke,
I agree 100% that the benefits of getting to go to a BCS far outweigh $300k. However, it does tell something about a conference when they take all the profit away from the school that goes to a BCS game.
February 11th, 2010 at 9:51 am
Apparently the Big 10 has selected its top choice for its 12th team, and it is NOT Notre Dame, Missouri, or Pitt...it is *Texas*. They are reportedly going to offer a huge ($10-15 million) bonus to Texas if it would join the Big 10. I do not think that Texas would leave, but they will use this for leverage to get an even bigger portion of the Big 12 TV money. That will make Colorado want to leave even more.
February 11th, 2010 at 9:58 am
Gambling $ for education and/or other necessities is great but we will need to put some restrictions in so that the powers that be cannot reduce the current allocations to these programs.
Otherwise it'll be like Oklahoma where they get gambling revenues but then reduce the education budget by the amount they take in from gambling.
Makes no sense because the education budget allocation turns out to be the same. Instead of increasing the education budget it ended up the same as before the gambling revenues started pouring in. Got to make sure the politicos don't divert the revenues.

FYI: The lottery is called "poor people's tax", because it usually the poor people that pay for it and since they are in an already low tax bracket. I have lived in California for 12 years and have yet to pay for a scratch or lottery ticket. I have received them as Christmas gifts or gift exchanges but that's about it.
As far as the lottery for only education, I think that is the law here but the politicians get around it by "borrowing" from it. Just like they "borrowed" from the teachers retirement fund but don't intend to pay back.
Maybe if UH didn't take every person associated with UH football and their families, it might not cost $3 million to play a BCS bowl.

Good morning Bloggers!
Nice to have a few showers for a thirsty aina.
A-House #68. Yeah, sounds like a good set-up. Alaska has $33.7 BILLION "rainy day" fund from its natural resource royalties. I don't believe there's legislation preventing lawmakers from touching the money, but everyone knows that the first legislator who proposes to use it will be flushed out of office. I didn't have time to recheck my memory (notoriously bad!), but I think 25% of yearly earnings from the Permanent Fund goes to fund the government, 25% is divided among the residents, and 50% goes back to the fund. I maintain that Alaska could get a good return on investment and fulfill a common good by lending money to needy states. If a state forfeits on a loan and is foreclosed on, Alaska would only get bigger when it forecloses. LOL They would pay lots to get Hawaii and make it an extension of the Aleutians. OK...time for my meds! hehehe

@ #34...
That is honestly my ultimate goal, is to become a coach for the university of hawaii someday. I have looked in to this and there are actually programs at a couple schools that pertain directly towards coaching. I know west virginia has a program like that. So I've already looked into it.

You know, I've always felt I could of been a devastating softball player for the UH Wahine. Hit for power, average, short fence could of got some homers. All I needed was an attorney to sue for gender discrimination.
Great photo of Colt and the chief. Items like that are why I always come back, like a bad rash, to this blog.
February 11th, 2010 at 10:31 am
there is much discussion in various community organizations regarding the gambling proposal being presented in the legislature. before coming up with a solution, opinion, how or where these monies can be used check out their concerns.
I know the economy needs a boost but caution on this issue is advised. as mentioned by north shore fan this touches a smaller part of a bigger picture.
February 11th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Good morning everyone!
ST -- great pix of Colt and the Obama's.
Good luck to Kelly Majam and the Rainbow Wahine softball team throughout the season!

Any form of gambling really needs to be thought out before anything is done. There is just too much money involved, people (sorry but thoses in the Gov't) see all those $$$$ signs an the first thing they think of how they can get there hands on it. There are ways to make it work, but they need to set in concrete, so that the funds go to the places that they where intended to. North shore is right about them not cutting existing funds
But heck where just dreaming until spring practice anyway. LOL
February 11th, 2010 at 11:35 am
mm,kk, and Pomai,
all good points, there are unrealized social costs that we as a state will bear with the influx of legalized gambling.....some are obvious and others are yet to be seen.
much thought and discussion needs to take place before ANYTHING happens, this is not a 'quick fix' and could be the last straw in the dismantling of our local economy.
just my 2 sense.....
February 11th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Hawaii will never ever be in the Mountain West or Pac 10. Never!!! We are stuck in the WAC forever and will soon have our biggest rival be Idaho. That is reality. We are geographically challenged and that is the biggest problem. They don't was us guys. UH is the ugly girl at the dance.
February 11th, 2010 at 11:55 am
Regarding # 37
Garret:
I'm going to play devil advocate on this one. The problem is not the sharing of revenue by WAC teams that did not make a BCS Bowl. The problem is the unequal sharing of BCS Bowl participation money by non-BCS teams who play in a BCS Bowl game. If Boise received the same money Cincinnati did for playing in a BCS Bowl game then this discussion would not be taking place. Just thought I'd throw that out there for further discussion.

Regarding # 34
One measure of determining which candidate supports public education from top to bottom is their position on the middle class. Candidates who favor a strong middle class (which includes all of us here) will be strong supporter of public education from 1 to the university level. I don't want to get any more political than that on this blog.

just realized that its maizie in the pix.

I don't really agree with BC on a lot of things, but I have to say that he's right on saying that simply doing nothing and hoping something good will happen or get better is never a good way of doing business. Too many people in Hawaii have a defeatist attitude of "why bother" and things never change. Look at fmr Gov Burns who pushed for Aloha Stadium, Div-1 status, and WAC Membership. Everyone thought he was pupule. Same goes for when plans were drawn up for the new UH arena in the lower campus and initial seating capacity was something like 6.000. Stan Sheriff set them straight.
February 11th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
say it isn't so....
our 2010 schedule has a remarkable six home games in a row!
and we end with four road games!?
outrageous!
unbelievable!
ridiculous!
asinine!
thank you karl benson.

I don't see dates. Could this just be a list that someone from the HA put together?
February 11th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
One thing that irks me about the Oregon Lottery is how much money they seem to spend on advertising. They must have data that shows that they get this much return for so much they spend in advertising, but for some reason it seem wrong. All that money could be going to the schools rather than the media outlets (no offense ST & the HA).
I have a hard time believing that there are hordes of people over here that don't know about the lottery -- or are sitting at home on the couch, see a commercial, and think, "oh, my. Look at all the fun those folks are having scratching silver stuff off those little cards. That could be me! Off to the convenience store..."
February 11th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
I agree with 81
Too many obstacles and looking at the dirty side of college athletics -"the bizness side" along with academics compared to other schools that are on the potential list, we're more than a long shot. might be easier just to win the national championship. Good thought, but we better find a way to get the balance sheet in order before anything else. - Cook it! jk
When you really look at it, If I'm the Pac 10, I want the best of the best, I'm looking to keep up with the SEC's, Big Ten's, Big 12.. I am asking Texas to join at a minimum.. Interesting to see the shake up, but I'd rather get excite about the preferred walk-on's kranking it in spring practice!

Well spoken. I have to research more on this as it seems quite interesting.

there is no way Benson has the football schedule complete already.
February 11th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
al,
We close the 2010 against UNLV at home. I think they just listed the home WAC games and then the away WAC games. I did notice, though, that we don't even start our WAC schedule until October!
February 11th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
The 2010 football schedule, like the schedules in previous years, will likely be swayed by which games the ESPN networks pick up. Once most of those are established, and the OOC games accounted for, than the WAC offices can go ahead and assemble the rest of the conference schedules.
I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait until late March or early April for the full WAC schedules to come out.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
okay....thanks.
i just reacted i guess.
guess i'll head on out to fujioka's or tamura's for some soothing beverages.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
I agree about the football schedule not being ready yet. It's gonna take Benson a while to come up with the most favorable schedule for Boise. You know gotta get Boise's OK and everything.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Below is my response to Jerry Burris's blog - see below - which has been held up for moderation - whatever that means
I am closely tracking all the gambling bills and will report on those which survite the first round so that those of you who would like to have the state examine some aspect of gambling as a revenue source can contact legislaators. Also, Las Vegas casino operators are not opposed out of hand - they see this as a way to provide consulting as well as management services.
As for social ills caused by LEGALgambling - let's compare them to the ones caused by ILLEGAL gambling.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

a lunch to discuss WAC football schedule? I say that Bosie St will have an open date before UH visits.
just like in 2009, they had an open date before traveling to Hawaii. Would the outcome be different if they played a road game before coming to Hawaii?
maybe, if Bosie St goes to the MWC, Benson will tag along as the sanitation engineer.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
{As for social ills caused by LEGALgambling - let's compare them to the ones caused by ILLEGAL gambling.}
Great point, never thought of it in that way. Just one more thing to think about.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Legalized gambling will quickly become the 800-pound gorilla in the room...gotta make sure you know who is gonna handle that and how before you invite it in.
February 11th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
ahouse....first of all, fujioka's and tamura's sell wines, imported beers, etc.
since we are the road team for the boise st game, i'd bet that we have a road game the week before the boise st game.

I cannot accept that challenge because that's what I expect to happen.

I am sure the State of Hawaii has no shortage of committee names and selection ideas to find out who "DA HUI" will be.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Lotteries:
I'd rather have 220 people each win $1 million than one person winning $220 million.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:29 pm
ST - # 106 - that can be done. The $220M is usually those multi-state powerball-like lotteries.

HOW'S THE WEATHER AT MANOA??? GAME ON TONIGHT STILL I HOPE!!!
February 11th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Probably would be a progressive pot kind of thing...keep the pot growing until someone wins it all.
Anyhoo, how many of you guys participated in a "office pool" or pool at the super bowl party or put some cash down in Vegas or with the local bookie?

Not long ago there was a talk of bring in horse racing track to Ala Wai Golf course. That would have surely turned Hawaii econmy around very quickly today.
Imagine all the tax revenue it will bring in and keep raising those taxes and no one would complain.
Imagine all the tourist crossing the Ala Wai bridge daily to spend that extra dollar.
Imagine all the Kentucky and Asian race farm moving to Maui and Big island hiring island poniolo's to run and train horse on way to Asian races and vis verse.
Japan features wold's riches turf race 'The Japan Cup' and their triple crown.
Australia have nearly 400 racecourses.
British left Hong Kong racing tradition is now part of China.
Financial tycoons, from Western expats to Taipei high rollers, the electric addiction of horseracing has made this territory of just 6.5 million people home to a world record-setting betting turnover of over US$11.7 billion a year.
Dubai, UAE hold Dubai World Cup boasting puse of $6 million.
The List goes on. Nothing comparing to our triple crown.
Plus we in Hawaii get to see not only beatiful women but all the beatiful horses.
Plus there will be no furlough for State workers and the DOE teachers.
I don't know about the students but parents, unions and everyone else will be happy.
Plus we will be able to boost having fast women and beautiful horses. Or was that the other way around.
Come on Bring On the race track... to Ala Wai Golf Course.
I'm a golfer but I have never golfed at Ala Wai. Comparing golf revenue at Ala Wai to horse is peanuts.
So who's taking over Mayor in Honolulu... Are you listening?

If you think real estate prices are horrendous now, just imagine what full blown gambling would do to it? Do you want your kids to be able to own a home here?
A lottery and couple of casinos nuff.
