About the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy: Looking Toward the Future

The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP), founded in 2005, holds candidate accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Created to address a shortage of pharmacists locally and nationally, the college has strong ties to the community.

Applicants for admission should have a minimum GPA of 2.5, with a GPA of 3.25 in all science and mathematics courses. In addition, students must place in the 50th percentile (minimum composite score) after taking the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) and have no grade lower than C- in required courses.

Undergraduate students must complete 72 semester hours of pre-professional courses that form the foundation for the professional curriculum in subsequent years. This requirement also includes general education courses that will "encourage the broadening of intellectual powers and interests."

Applicants to the professional program receive a "holistic review" that considers, along with academic achievement, interest in the pharmacy profession, community and volunteer service, work experience (especially if pharmacy-based or health-related), leadership skills, maturity, and abilities. The admissions committee encourages applicants to acquire some experience in pharmacy before admission. The Pharmaceutical Sciences department offers a visible and active research program that focuses on developing drugs to treat cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. PharmD students also may participate in laboratory-based research guided by mentors who are themselves active researchers.

NEOUCOP offers the PharmD degree in a unique partnership arrangement with a network of institutions, including University of Akron, Kent State University, Youngstown State University, and Cleveland State University. Under this partnership, students from these universities receive "preferential consideration for admission."

Both the pre-professional and PharmD programs seek to develop "professional practitioners capable of understanding their role as healthcare providers in a culturally diverse society."

Refworks announced that it will be changing their interface to make it "cleaner, more streamlined" for users. The transition to Refworks 2.0 is going to take place in the next 3 months. However, you will have the option of using the old or new interface before the change to Refworks 2.0 is permanent. This transition period will allow users to adjust to the new interface. Refworks 2.0 will still retain the same functionality but also incorporate "Web 2.0 conventions, making it easier to navigate and more visually appealing." Check out a preview of the new Refworks interface and FAQ's.
