I think that the crisis has been exacerbated by woolly thinking about university intake and funding.

Firstly, there are an enormously larger proportion of young people nowadays studying at university or "university", people eager to say to future employers that they've attended lectures in a building labelled "university".

Secondly, because of this larger number, the state has shifted the financial burden onto the students themselves (loans and part-time work in term-time) and their parents, who will always end up topping up where the students themselves can't cope. If you must go to university, without a few years off to earn money and see the world, you will end up either fragmenting the time you should be spending studying by doing menial jobs to make ends meet, or scrounging from your parents, or with a great big debt once you start work, paid off over decades.

And the universities themselves, owing to insecurity about the continuity of national funding, try to import as many rich Taiwanese and other foreign students to help fill the university coffers.

This is all cock-eyed. So I agree with Harry's last point.

I'd like to hear more from students themselves, living in whatever country, about their aspirations, certificates aimed at, employment prospects, and the financial plusses and minuses of study, whether at a respectable university or a Dothestudents-Paythroughthenose Academy.
