On Senior Day, Scott Rodgers led all UT Dallas scorers with 15 points, Curtis Davis and Jared Fleming each pitched in 12, and the Comets polished their American Southwest Conference record of 18-2 by defeating the YellowJackets for the 13th time in 14 tries.
“It was a great end (to the season),” said UTD coach Terry Butterfield. “It gives us momentum heading into next week. But my heart goes out to our seniors, who went out in a good way. They all got to play, they all contributed, and that pleases me to have such a special group.”
UTD capped the regular season by winning 14 of its final 15 contests, with its only loss coming in a deflating, last-second decision at Louisiana College back on Feb. 4. Since then, the Comets have rattled off four wins by eight points or less.
But their win over LETU on Saturday was their largest margin of victory since a 94-66 drubbing of LC near the tail-end of January. UTD jumped out to a 16-7 lead against the YellowJackets, and never looked back. In fact, the Comets never trailed throughout.
LETU would narrow the lead to four points before halftime, but UTD clamped down in the second half and widened the gap to as much as 24. Rodgers triggered a 3 with 9:50 left, and that’s when the Comets began to empty their bench.
All four seniors—Rodgers, Fleming, Jordan Eppink and Garrett Hillen—contributed in a second half where UTD held the YellowJackets to just 25 points on 9 of 25 shooting. Eppink finished with 10 points and five rebounds, and Hillen chipped in with four points.
