New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is heading straight forward in preparing itself for Commonwealth Games 2010, the mega event which will enrobe the capital in October 2010.

Finishing its task well before the stated time, the university is all prepared with its games stadium, and has even started hosting a few inter-state competitions as dress rehearsals for the Commonwealth Games (CWG).

JMI's Vice Chancellor, Najeeb Jung assured that, "The stadium constructed for the CWG is well ahead of the deadline and will be handed over to the authorities by March 2010."

The university is decided to be the training centre for the CWG players in three disciplines - rugby, badminton and table tennis.

"The stadium stands on world class criteria where players will certainly have a nice time preparing themselves. It is a state-of-the-art where the sports complex will hold at least three state level competitions from March," the VC added.

Asserting his commitment to make the mega sport event a grand success, he said that, "We are going to host several competitions which will also be inter-state in nature from March - April."

Upon being asked about the utilization of the stadium post CWG, the VC replied that, "The University serves 19000 students who would be the obvious beneficiary of the development. We will use it for them."

Talking about his varsity's contribution to Indian sports, he proudly boasted of producing Virender Sehwag like sports personality. "Jamia has an ancient tradition for sports. The great Nawab of Pataudi gifted to us the present sports ground," he said.

Further talking about its contributions, to the Games, Jung said that Jamia has also decided to send 1000 volunteers under the National Service Scheme (NSS) for the CWG. These volunteers stand equal in number in terms of girls and boys and shall be involved in various activities related to Games.

"The CWG authority is also helped by1000 more students from the university leaving apart the NSS part," he added.

The CWG scheduled for October 3-14, 2010, will host over 7000 athletes from 73 countries.
